Musings of Nico Tijsen
‘I found my love in Portofino,’ crooned Fred Buscaglione in the 1950’s when the Italian fishing village was about to become one of the world’s most glamorous destinations, with the Belmond Hotel Splendido as its centerpiece. Perched above the yacht-dotted bay, the hotel occupies a former 16th-century monastery; its sister property Splendido Mare, meanwhile, sits on the fabled Piazzetta. From the elegantly furnished bedrooms and ocean-view balconies to the infinity pool and four acres of olive-lined tropical gardens, the Splendido inspires pure romance; no wonder Richard Burton reportedly proposed to Elizabeth Taylor here. Signature restaurant La Terrazza specializes in regional cuisine, and diners sit on an alfresco terrace with views of Portofino Bay and the Tigullian Gulf.
